WOW! What an incredible story told in the most thoughtful and sensitive manner. Whether you like hockey or history or just a remarkable true story, you knocked it out of the park (or maybe into the net?) on this one Thom. Bravo!

What a terrific story!

I always knew there were questions about Albertine Lapensee, but I never knew the true scope of it.

The amount of research you put into this book is amazing. I am happy to add Miracle Maid to my ever growing collection of hockey books.

Congratulations on a superb effort.

Wow, where do I start. I just finished your book and congratulations on a terrific read!!! You are to be commended on your relentless efforts to solve a mystery so relevant to the history of sports in Cornwall. Your research flows so effortlessly throughout the book. When I read a sports bio, I don’t enjoy a recounting of games, I prefer to know what’s going on behind the scenes. You tackled this aspect of telling Albertine Lapensée’s story with great detail. I also enjoyed your thoughts on what might have happened if there was no corroborating evidence. You left no stone UN-turned and I’m sure your career as a police officer assisted you in unlocking Albertine’s story. Congratulations on seeing it through to its compassionate ending.

Steve H

Amazing story, I read slowly, but have to say I could not put this down for very long. Well done!

Thank you so much for preserving the stories of our past, especially those that have been buried for many years.

It was a great read.

Thom Racine

Thom Racine was born in Cornwall, Ontario and grew up in Ottawa. The family often returned to Cornwall where young Thom spent many hours listening to his grandmother, author Dorothy Donihee, tell her stories about growing up in the Smithville neighbourhood under the smokestacks of Cornwalls Howard Smith Paper Mill. Thom returned to Cornwall in 1981 when he was hired as a police officer and where he resides with his wife Karen. Proud parents of a grown son, Jarrett, Racines love for Cornwall history was solidified during the 32 years he spent patrolling the Citys streets where he heard many unique local stories – both old and new.

Following his passion for sports Thom found a way to police the city and work in television and radio for more than thirty years while writing sports and general interest columns for local papers. He has broadcast hockey games in Cornwall since 1986 and his voice can be heard in the area arenas as the public address announcer.

He is the author of two previously self-published books Constable Davey – A Future Lost 2011 a true story of the murder of a town policeman in 1892 and the family the officer left behind, and in 2014 he completed Moe The Toe – Never My Dream a memoir about his father’s seventeen-year Hall of Fame professional football career.

Both books received The Seeker’s Choice Award for Literary Artist of the Year 2012 and 2015 and helped prepare him for this third voyage back in time with The Miracle Maid. Retired since 2012, the former Police Sergeant is always ready to shine the light on history, proving we are never limited when deciding to take the first step “backwards.”
